Parkour is one of the fastest growing activities in the U.S. It is very much like a martial art in that it is a fun and beneficial form of physical and mental exercise, and looks cool too! At the Modern Self Defense Center, we see that there is a desire by the general public to take part in this amazing new sport/lifestyle, but very few legitimate outlets to do so. That is why AMParkour has put so much effort into creating a program tailored to the needs of the monkeys lying dormant in all of us. The training conducted in our program is focused on safe, creative repetition of fundamental movement in order to acclimate the Traceur's body to the stress experienced during Parkour training “in the real world.” We hope you’ll come down and try out one of our seminars, or even start in our weekly classes!
Parkour Essentials: This class is for students ages 9 - 15. Weekly classes are designed to focus on particular skills each day. The class starts with a dynamic warm up to get the blood flowing. Following the warm up, the group works on certain skills within Parkour, whether that be a specific "technique" (kong, wall run, cat leap, etc. . .) or a fundamental type of movement (vaulting, climbing, balancing, etc. . .). Most classes end with either a free period to practice skills at your own pace, or with an obstacle course involving the skill of the night. Class Schedule
Parkour Adult: We have a separate Parkour Adult class for older students. This class is open to students 16+ years old.
One Sunday a month at the Modern Self Defense Centerwill be dedicated to introducing new people to the ideas of Parkour, the French“Art of Movement.” This hour and a half class is open to the public and will discuss what Parkour is and isn’t, training methods for safe, long lasting practice, and why learning Parkour can benefit you in your every day life. However, no one comes to a martial arts school for a lecture, so the main focus will be putting Parkour training into action. These classes will focus on teaching proper form in fundamental Parkour movements, and eventually putting them together in a flow so that you may experience what Parkour is really about. Expect some jumping, crawling, climbing, vaulting and balancing. This class is open to everyone, from those looking for a fun way to get in shape, to those who already workout and want to learn new ways to apply their athleticism. Come on down and bring a friend. Who knows, you might get hooked. If you came to previous classes, you still have plenty to try out. There will be enough review to solidify some of the skills learned at the first class, and more than enough new material to keep you from getting bored.
